Announcement: ICAAP on 2011

Expression of Interest (EOI) to Prospective Hosts for the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP, 2011)

The AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP) is the custodian of International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP). It is also a primary co-sponsor of the ICAAP. The ICAAP is the biennial Congress on HIV and AIDS for the Asia Pacific region which brings together civil society with government, researchers, other societies and the private sector. The last ICAAP was held in Colombo in August 2007. The 9th ICAAP will be held in August 2009, in Bali, Indonesia.

ASAP is now calling for expressions of interest from organisations or groups that wish to host the 10th ICAAP in the second half of 2011. Organisations or groups should be representative of civil society, such as an NGO or a group of NGOs, having the support of the national government and be prepared to raise sponsorship for the Congress.

It is particularly important that a partnership be established between civil society and government in order to ensure that there are no restrictions imposed by the government on the entry of People Living with HIV or those who are members of vulnerable groups such as drug users and sex workers, when attending the Congress. The Congress will include full involvement of the community sector and a strong scientific programme. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) will have ultimate responsibility for the Congress' staging and content but will be guided by a Joint ASAP-UNAIDS Working Group to assure satisfactory progress in its organisation, a conference organiser to guide logistics and an independent International Advisory Committee (IAC) to advise and support the content and its quality.

The host organisation is required to raise the necessary funds to manage the Congress, including support for a substantial scholarship programme. Previous Congresses have received substantial support from international donors as well as local and international business.

Prerequisites

Hosting an ICAAP stipulates a number of prerequisites on the host organisation. These are related to a number of important aspects in developing the Congress as well as addressing longer term ICAAP sustainability issues. A list of prerequisites/conditions can be found on ASAP's website.

Organisations or groups, wishing to be considered may lodge an EOI/Bid document with ASAP at any time before 30 January 2009. All EOIs/Bids will be considered on their merits by an ASAP Selection Team. When deemed appropriate, ASAP may decide to conduct a scoping mission before a recommendation is made to the ASAP Executive Committee for selection.
